Hand Painting A Knotty Pine Kitchen In Haversham, Milton Keynes

Haversham,  Milton Keynes  Reclaimed Pine Kitchen In Need Of A Full Refurbishment .

My client contacted me after finding my details on traditionalpainter.com  to see if it would be possible to have there Reclaimed knotty pine kitchen refurbished and hand painted, Being Reclaimed pine it required a lot of attention and lots of preparation,  But after over 30 years of refurbishing kitchens there’s not much I haven’t seen or done in the kitchen world. I would be Hand Painting it in an eqvilent colour match to Farrow & Ball New White, A nice soft cream off white which would lighten up the area and give the North facing room the appearance of more space and natural light reflection.

Prior to starting any repairs and making good the first job was to give the furniture a complete deep clean with a degreaser to remove all traces of grease wax & polish.

Priming & Painting

After finishing the making good and repairs it was time to start the painting, As we remove the Doors and Drawer fronts they are worked on in our workshop and refitted when completed.  We first apply the adhesive primer which also acts as a stain block to any tanning that can bleed through the completed paint finish, We have this mixed in the top coat colour so we are building up the depth of colour from the first to the final coat, Once the primer is applied we can then see any minor filling that is required,  After sanding down we then apply a 2nd coat to act as an undercoat, We then flat down again with very smooth paper to produce a fine finish, Remove the dust by vacuum and tack cloth the surface , It is now ready for the final two top coats of our preferred furniture paint brand Tikkurila,  A beautiful satin or matt finish that is very durable perfect for hard ware areas like kitchens, It is the preferred paint brand for many of the UK leading Bespoke kitchen manufacturers.

As you can see from this picture it really did need some attention:

The Doors and Drawers were in- Frame , so sit in the framework to the cabinets and not on the fronts , Most of them required easing prior to painting

Items like plate racks and wine racks can be a problem to paint, We normally remove these if possible to work on in the workshop and produce a much better finish then on site, Once the doors and drawer fronts are removed it makes it much easier to paint the remaining cabinets and framework and also produces a much better finish, Im always surprised when I start a kitchen refurbishment that has been painted in the past how badly most have been carried out.
